Colorado summers are perfect for getting outside, but the heat can take a toll on your body if you’re not prepared. Whether you’re hitting the trails, going for a run, or stopping by the gym for a workout, taking a few extra precautions can help you stay safe and feel your best.
Time Your Workouts
One of the easiest ways to avoid the hottest part of the day is to exercise in the morning or later in the evening. Temperatures are usually cooler, making it easier to stay comfortable and perform at your best.
Even a small increase in temperature can make your heart work harder to keep your body cool, which can cause you to tire more quickly. If you’re working out in the middle of the day, take breaks when you need them and try to find shaded areas whenever possible.
Stay Hydrated
You don’t have to wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already starting to get dehydrated.
Research shows that losing as little as 2% of your body weight through sweat can affect endurance, strength, and concentration. Drink water throughout the day, not just during your workout. If you’re planning a longer or more intense workout, bring a water bottle with you so you can sip regularly.
Don’t Forget Electrolytes
When you sweat, your body loses more than just water. It also loses important minerals like sodium and potassium that help your muscles and nerves work properly.
For workouts lasting longer than about an hour, especially in hot weather, replacing electrolytes can help reduce muscle cramps, support recovery, and maintain performance. An electrolyte drink after exercise can be a helpful addition on those extra sweaty days.
Dress for the Weather
Lightweight, breathable clothing can make a big difference during the summer months. Moisture wicking fabrics help keep you cooler and more comfortable while you exercise.
Don’t forget sunscreen if you’re heading outdoors, even on cloudy days.
Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion
Your body will usually let you know when it’s time to slow down. Watch for symptoms like dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps, excessive sweating, or feeling unusually weak.
If you notice these signs, stop exercising, move to a cool place, drink water, and give your body time to recover. It’s always better to take a break than try to push through the heat.
