How to Overcome Gym Anxiety

7 Tips for Beginners

At Valor Elite Training, we understand the barriers that gym anxiety creates when you first begin working out. It can feel as though everyone is watching you and judging you, which is a hard feeling to overcome. However, there are tips that can help you break through anxiety and start your fitness journey with ease.

Have a plan and set goals

Before you leave for the gym, setting personal goals  can help motivate you to focus only on yourself. Preplan your workout routine so you know exactly what equipment you need and where you will workout in the facility. Planning ahead can help reassure any nerves you might feel beforehand.

Bring a friend

If you are nervous to go alone, bring a friend! A companion at the gym can bring comfort and familiarity as you workout. Invite someone that you trust so when your anxiety peaks, they can be there to help you.

Avoid peak gym hours

One major stress-inducer for gym beginners is a gym being busy and packed with other people. Going during peak hours means waiting for machines to be free, finding spaces that are not already occupied, and avoiding eye contact with gym-goers. Therefore, try going in the mornings or later at night to help with comfort levels.

Start small

Going to the gym does not mean doing an excessive amount of exercises and staying for three hours every day. An effective workout can be done in 30 minutes with a quick warm-up and cool-down. Start small with your exercises and do not push yourself past your limits.

Dress comfortably

How you dress in the gym can significantly impact your confidence. Dressing comfortably is important so you can feel more comfortable in a shared space. If you look good, you can feel good about yourself while doing things that may be out of your comfort zone.

Be kind to yourself

Remember, no one is perfect at the gym. You are not alone if you suffer from gym anxiety. The gym is a place for you to relieve anxiety and feel strong in yourself. Be kind to yourself and to others so your fitness experience is a positive one.

Look into personal training

If a shared gym environment is not for you, personal training sessions can be a great way to focus only on your health.
